Adobe’s compressor is a sensible free tool, and it asks for nothing to use it. The two differences that matter are where the document goes and how you tell it what you want.
Where the document goes
The files people compress are very often the ones they would least like to hand over: contracts before signature, bank statements for a loan application, medical reports, HR files, scans of passports and ID cards. Adobe deletes files it does not need to keep, and there is no reason to doubt that. Here there is no copy to delete in the first place.
You can check that yourself. Open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and compress a file. No request carries it anywhere. Or compress one file, switch off your connection, and compress another: it still works.
Telling it what you want
A compression level is a guess about what you need. A size limit is what you actually have. To a size works from the limit:
- A file already under it is left exactly as it was.
- A file that fits after a lossless rebuild keeps selectable text.
- Anything else is redrawn, starting sharp and stepping down only as far as the limit forces.
It counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, the stricter of the two ways systems count, so a file made for 1 MB fits whichever one the recipient uses. If a document cannot get that small, the tool says so and gives the smallest size it reached, so you can decide whether to split it.
When Adobe is the better choice
Acrobat is the reference PDF software, and the full paid Acrobat does far more than compress: editing text and images in place, OCR, redaction, forms, signatures and accessibility checking. If your work lives in PDFs, it earns its price.
Adobe’s page cites reductions of 50 to 80 percent depending on how image heavy a file is. On an exported PDF full of photos, a compressor that works on the images inside may beat our lossless option on size while keeping the text as text, so for that kind of file it is worth trying both.
For getting an everyday document under a limit, especially one you would rather not upload, there is no need to send it anywhere.

Is this Adobe Acrobat?
No, and it has no connection to Adobe. Adobe and Acrobat are trademarks of Adobe. This is a separate PDF compressor that works inside your browser.
How does Adobe's online compressor handle my file?
On 11 September 2026, Adobe's compress page said files are handled by Adobe's servers and deleted unless you sign in to save them, and that it offers High, Medium and Low compression levels for files up to 2 GB. It did not require an account to compress. Here the file is never sent anywhere, so there is nothing to handle or delete.
Why compress to a size rather than choose a level?
Because the limit is usually what you were given. An email server that rejects attachments over 10 MB, or a form that says "maximum 1 MB", does not care about levels. To a size takes that number and finds the sharpest result under it, and tells you plainly if the document cannot get that small.
Will my text stay selectable?
If a lossless rebuild is enough to fit, yes, and the tool says so. If the pages have to be redrawn to fit, the text becomes part of an image. For scanned documents, which were images to begin with, that loses nothing.
