Disclaimer
Every calculator on this site shows the formula it uses and the assumptions it makes, because a number you cannot check is a number you should not rely on. This page sets out the limits of what these tools can tell you.
Financial calculators
The mortgage, loan and compound interest calculators use standard published formulas and are arithmetically correct for the inputs you supply. They are estimates for comparison, not quotations, and they are not financial advice.
What they cannot know:
- Your actual rate. Lenders price on credit history, income, deposit and product. The rate you are offered may differ substantially from the one you entered.
- Fees. Origination fees, points, arrangement fees, valuation, legal and closing costs are excluded. On a mortgage these commonly add 2–5% of the purchase price.
- Rate changes. Everything assumes a fixed rate for the full term. Variable and adjustable-rate products behave differently.
- Tax. Interest relief, deductions and tax on investment returns vary by country and by individual and are not modelled.
- Investment reality. Returns are modelled as steady growth. Real markets are volatile, and the order in which returns arrive matters a great deal when you are withdrawing.
Before committing to any borrowing, get the lender’s own figures in writing - a Loan Estimate in the US, a Key Facts Illustration in the UK, or the equivalent where you live - and consider speaking to a qualified, regulated financial adviser.
Health calculators
The BMI and calorie calculators apply published equations to the figures you enter. They are general information, not medical advice, and they are not a diagnosis.
What they cannot account for:
- Body composition. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes routinely record an “overweight” BMI while carrying very little body fat.
- Ethnicity. Metabolic risk appears at lower BMI values in East and South Asian populations, which is why the WHO proposed additional trigger points at 23 and 27.5.
- Age and life stage. The adult categories do not apply to anyone under 20, whose BMI is read against age-and-sex percentile charts. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and older age all change energy needs.
- Medical conditions and medication. Thyroid disorders, diabetes, and many common medications alter metabolic rate and body composition.
Anything that would change how you eat, train or medicate belongs with a doctor or a registered dietitian who can see your full history. If you are worried about your weight, your eating, or a symptom, please speak to a clinician rather than a calculator.
Security and cryptographic tools
The password generator uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, and the hash generator uses the native Web Crypto API. Both are implemented carefully and documented.
Nonetheless, a browser tab is not a secure enclave. Extensions, malware and screen sharing can observe what is on your screen. For high-value secrets - a password manager master password, a cryptocurrency seed phrase, production signing keys - generate them with dedicated offline software on a trusted machine.
MD5 and SHA-1 are provided for checksum verification and are labelled as cryptographically broken. Do not use them for signatures, certificates or password storage.
File tools
PDF and image tools process files in your browser. We never receive them, and consequently we cannot recover anything. Keep your originals. Closing the tab discards everything in progress.
Removing pages from a PDF genuinely removes them. Covering text with a black rectangle does not - the text remains in the file and can be recovered. If information must not be disclosed, remove the whole page.
